Smith loses to Flay in Iron Chef battle
NEW YORK—Michael Smith is sure to be studying up recipes that include avocado.
The resident of Prince Edward Island and star of Food Network Shows Chef Abroad and Chef at Home battled it out on Iron Chef America in late January.
Avocado was Smith’s undoing as he lost to Bobby Flay in the head-to-head culinary battle by a score of 54 to 40.
Flay and Smith each had to plate five dishes using avocados as the secret ingredient. His dishes included grilled avocado and oysters, beef bacon and avocado, white chocolate avocado mousse, an avocado and tuna combination appetizer and a club sandwich stuffed with crab.
Smith received 40 out of a maximum 60 points for the dishes, judged on taste, originality and plating. Flay scored 54 points.
Working alongside Smith were sous chefs Paul Rogalski, co-owner of Calgary’s Rouge, and Bill Pratt, a retired Canadian Navy chef from Halifax.
The judging panel included actor Antonio Sabato, Jr., Anya Fernald and Donatella Arpaia.
