Halifax patios to open early
HALIFAX—A century later, the sinking of the Titanic is being used here
to float more business to restaurants and other establishments with
patios.
Regional council voted last week to allow businesses with patio permits to put them up about 10 days earlier than the usual Apr. 21 date to take advantage of visitors coming in for activities around the 100th anniversary of the tragedy at sea.
While a number of businesses would like to see the earlier opening made permanent, there is no indication this is going to happen. Patio opening will revert to Apr. 21 next year.
The request for the earlier date this year was made by councilor Dawn Sloan, in the interest of bar and restaurant operators in the downtown district she represents.
Sloan would like to see patios made permanent, according to a Metro Halifax report.
