Gluten-free cafe with Pete's Frootique
HALIFAX—Pete’s Frootique in downtown Halifax has opened a gluten-free eatery upstairs.
Pete’s Gluten Free Eatery & Coffee Bar, the latest enterprise of celebrity grocer, media personality and winery owner Pete Luckett. opened last week in the Dresden Row Market area. It is an escalator ride upstairs from the Frootique which anchors the City Centre Atlantic complex housing the marketplace.
After several months serving snacks, tea and coffee, the café was re-made as a dining area serving gluten-free pastries, muffins, cookies, sandwiches, soups and salads, from local suppliers Schoolhouse Gluten Free Gourmet and Odell’s Gluten free.
“We’ve noted a real call for gluten-free,” Frootique operations manager Holly Chmelyk told The Chronicle Herald, explaining that an increasing number of people suffering from celiac disease or gluten intolerance has led to consumer demand.
The location upstairs away from the food store helps ensure there will be no cross-contamination from foods that have gluten.
The restaurant is open seven days a week.
